Hogmanay
New Year’s Eve was a big event for the Leithers in exile, bigger than Christmas.
Jean and Charlie always had a big party and their small living room was filled with family, neighbors, and friends. The ceiling was strewn with colored paper chains and dining chairs were lined up around the room. The festivities began with a countdown to midnight on the Andy Stewart Show on TV - our equivalent to Anderson Cooper at Times Square.
After midnight the “first foot” would arrive. The first person to cross the threshold (preferably a tall dark man) brought good luck - and a wee dram, a piece of shortbread, and a lump of coal.
Then the singing began, starting with “Auld Lang Syne”. Everyone had to sing a solo (accapella as no-one except for my Uncle George played an instrument). People sang the same song year after year. The playlist included “Oh Shenandoah” (Charlie) and “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” (Janet).
My mum’s favorite drink was Babycham - considered light for the ladies. I felt so grown up when I was finally able to taste those golden bubbles. The party fare was very gourmet, especially when a pearl onion was added!
